Caudle St. Baptist Church Community Meal 9/24/2016
Grilled Chicken provided by First Security Bank.
Note: Thirds and fourths encouraged--at least on this occasion.
Samaritan Community Center ("SF" on Events Calendar) Sunday morning pre-service breakfast, 9/25/2016. Seconds were fully and heartily suggested!
House of Hope ("HOH" on Events Calendar) Friday morning, 9/30/2016. This was an incredible meal! Italian casserole, side salad, green beans, garlic bread, topped off by a very gratifying HOH rendition of the classic banana pudding. I truly have no idea how this team of volunteers pulled this off as efficiently and effortlessly as they appeared to. For me, this was a five star endeavor...perfected by a five star squad! ***** Did I mention, the place was almost standing room only, and anyone there would attest to that!

I'm going to start things out here by bringing up my favorite "next meal" in Springdale. Keep in mind this is just one of many places the needy can get a warm meal. I am talking about the Samaritan Fellowship. It's located in the Harps plaza off Backus. Here's how it goes: as you enter the building around 10:15am on a Mon., Tues., Thurs.,or Fri, you first smell the fresh brewed coffee. Then, without fail, you are greeted by one of the many volunteers. This is when you get your hot coffee. You take your seat and about 15 minutes later a short prayer is said, then like a holiday parade a stream of food laden carts come bounding out of the kitchen door, one right after the other! The volunteers seem to be in a race to see who can give out the most meal plates the fastest. It's actually quite a show! If you want seconds, they are quick to deliver on that too! I've had thirds a couple of times, but that was because they had so much food they were pushing it on me! The volunteers treat you like you are paying customers, and the food is normaly pretty good. Every now and then you'll get a hot dog day, but you know what they say about beggers... Anyway, give 'em a try and post your experience!
ReplyDeleteAndy is right about the Samaritan Felleowship, They are awesome. Howevever, there is another church in downtown Springdale, off of Emma St. called "House of Hope". They are right by the Amish store. On Wednesdays and Fridays you can get the best home cooked soup and sandwiches ever! I think they start at 10:30, but check the calendar or call them to make sure of the time. They have many other services that I hope Andy will post soon!
DeleteMore details regarding Samaritan. Address: 1300 N. Thompson Ave. Phone 479-872-1115. Web: http://samcc.org/. Call for more details regarding food pantry hours.
DeleteAnother church that offers really, really good, warm meals is St. Thomas Episcopal. The web page: www.stthomasspringdale.org. The address: 2898 S. 48th St. 72762. The phone number: 479.751.9184. The details: Every Tuesday at the church they offer a free hot, healthy, and delicious meal from 11:00a-12:30, then they serve it up again at Murphy park, under the big green pavilion (by the public library) at 1:00 to 2:00. The opinion (mine): This Husband/wife team (Whitey & Karen) truly deliver the goods! They always serve the freshest and very healthy meals with very generous portions that truly satisfy. For example, the lunch was honey glazed pink salmon! Those of you who know me will think I'm kidding around. I'm not though! Last week was classic lasagna, baconized green beans, and mac & cheese. Finished off with a simple but satisfying desert. I took a picture of the meal today, but having some trouble getting it posted...be patient with me. Oh, more details: On the third Friday of each month there is a food bank at the church. I haven't experienced that yet but if they are as generous with the food bank as they are with the free hot meals, well, you'll see.
ReplyDeleteI also have to mention that the free meals are a tremendous venue to meet other folks in the same situation. It's just a very chilled out way to hang out with other people in similar situations. I've always met someone new since I've been going.
So, enjoy, tell your friends, and tell 'em Andy sent you!

ReplyDeleteDison K. (a friend of mine)is right about the House of Hope (HOH)off of Emma. HOH is a rescue mission fully dedicated to Christian values. They are a ministry of New Hope Fellowship Church.
ReplyDeleteThe web page: www.nwahouseofhope.com. The address: 505 E.Emma Ave. 72764. The phone number: 479.756.7333. The details: There are so many details to this particular mission that I am only going to touch on the meal aspect of it. The hot, delicious meals are served Wednesday and Friday, 11:00 to close. Second portions are only served at 12:00-don't push them on this either! 12:00! That's it! Really, they just want to make sure everyone gets fed. Some days the place gets pretty busy/crowded. The opinion (mine): I will say this right away, I have never had such delectable soups as I have at HOH! Not only are they scrumptious and healthy, there are so many of them! Usually there are 4-5 steaming crock pots full of so many different varieties. I can't name them all because I am usually too busy eating to take notes! Maybe we can get someone to post a general menu of the various soups and sandwiches they serve. They also add to that crackers and fruit. Today, like every Wednesday and Friday, I had two servings. My first soup was called "cheeseburger". It is just absolutely impeccable! This is the quintessential man's soup (sorry ladies)! Cheese, meat, potatoes...pretty sure that's all we need to survive. By the time 12:00 rolled around cheeseburger was all gone :( Oh well, there was still the classic of all classics, vegetable beef soup! It was still steaming hot, just the right spices, and went so good with the smoked ham and turkey sandwich that came with it.
The ambiance at HOH is much like Samaritan Fellowship and St. Thomas Episcopal...very calm, low-key, and easy to have a conversation with just about anyone ready to talk. They even have their own security by one of Springdale's finest. You really should stop by. As always, enjoy, tell your friends, and tell 'em Andy sent you!
Keep in mind, HOH has many other services like a food pantry and clothing. Check in with them before lunch or give them a call to see if they might be able to help you or a friend/family member out.

ReplyDeleteEvery now and then the church provides a community meal. I'll post a reply when the next one comes up.
The next community meal looks like it will be Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5:00PM. The last time I attended one their community meals the place was packed but they still had enough healthy meals for everyone, plus seconds! You should check it out! Enjoy and tell your friends and family! Everyone is welcome.
